Biography
At the age of 3, she was introduced to the Bando School, a prestigious NIHON BUYO and Kabuki school, and at the age of 15 was given the name Bando Sengiku by 8th Mitsugoro Bando. She studied under Katsusen Bando, Mitsusen Bando, and Katsutomo Bando. Studied nagauta under Kiyohachi Okayasu, musical accompaniment under Sanosuke Mochizuki, and Ichinchu-bushi under Miyako Ichinchu.
Studied theater at the theater company Naman Gekijo (presided over by Yukio Mishima) and participated in theatrical activities.
As a choreographer, she has created numerous new works fusing various genres and exploring new territories. She has received high acclaim overseas, and has performed for a month at the Avignon Theater Festival in France (supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs), in collaboration with the Maarui Theater in Moscow, the Sibiu Theater Festival in Romania, the National Theater of Iceland, Norway, New York, and in one month at the Japan Cultural Institute in Paris, and in collaboration with the Maarui Theater in Moscow (supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs). Performed in 24 cities in 5 countries.
She also established the SENGIKU BANDO dance school, and has devoted herself to the inheritance of Japanese traditional dance.
She also formed the SENGIKU BANDO dance troupe and gaveNIHON BUYO performances in Ukraine, Central Asia, etc. (with the support of the Japan Foundation). Invited to Sibiu Theater Festival, Beijing, Shanghai Central Academy of Drama, Monaco Dance Forum hosted by the Queen of Monaco, etc. She is a specially appointed professor at the National Taipei University of the Arts.
